Running back Venric Mark was suspended for Northwestern’s first two games for violating team rules, the university announced Friday.

Mark, an All-American as a punt returner in 2012, will miss home games Aug. 30 against California and Sept. 6 against Northern Illinois.

‘‘I made a mistake and am prepared to deal with the consequences of that,’’ Mark said in a statement. ‘‘There’s no one that holds me to a higher standard than the one I hold myself to, so nobody is more disappointed than I am. First and foremost, I feel like I let my teammates down, and that feels the worst. I’m grateful to have another season to compete with this team.’’

Mark, who will take part in the rest of training camp, was granted an
additional year of eligibility after missing most of the 2013 season with an ankle injury.
