Fire coach Frank Yallop understands fans’ anger

Updated: September 9, 2014 6:34AM

Coach Frank Yallop understands how fans felt when the MLS transfer window closed at midnight Thursday and the Fire made no signings. Based on Twitter, there was some anger, some frustration and even more disappointment that the Fire, ninth in the Eastern Conference, didn’t do anything before the deadline to bolster a roster filled with holes.

“I can see where they’re coming from,” Yallop said. “I just want to make sure we make the right moves and the correct moves.”

Despite the caution, there was hope that the acquisition last month of midfielder Razvan Cocis would be the start of something this summer. It wasn’t, though Yallop said the Fire had a deal fall through this week after the selling team pulled out.

“Disappointing,” Yallop said. “It doesn’t give you much scope to move forward. We felt it would have been a good move for us, but we’ve got to move forward.”

With the transfer window closed, the Fire still can add free agents until the Sept. 15 roster freeze. Yallop said the club’s courtship of German-American midfielder and U.S. national-team star Jermaine Jones “is still out there,” though he said there’s “kind of” a deadline for an answer.

If Jones spurns the Fire, it won’t push Yallop into impulse signings after the disappointment and frustration of this week.

“As much as I want to get new players in and the team obviously needs it to push on and the fans want to see it, I really feel I want to make the right move for this club,” Yallop said. “If it means not getting anybody in this window, then maybe it works out for better than trying to deal with somebody or work with somebody you don’t quite want next year.

“Everything’s meant for a reason, I guess. If it didn’t work out, then so be it.”
