OAKLAND, Calif. — Jose Abreu hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning Wednesday to erase a one-run lead, and the White Sox held on to defeat the Oakland A’s 4-2 to avoid a three-game series sweep.

Gordon Beckham hit the first pitch of the game for his third homer against A’s starter Tommy Milone, and A’s leadoff man answered with a homer of his own against Sox starter Andre Rienzo in the first.

Josh Donaldson homered in the fourth to give the A’s a 2-1 lead. Rienzo allowed two hits over 6 1/3 innings, both solo homers.

Abreu leads the majors in homers and with 26 extra-base hits and 103 total bases. He has started all but one game and played in all 42.

Matt Lindstrom escaped trouble in the ninth, allowing a walk and single to start the inning but getting a double play grounder and his sixth save. Ronald Belisario (2-3) got the win in relief.
