Bears sign draft picks Brock Vereen, David Fales

Updated: May 16, 2014 11:29PM

The Bears signed fourth-round pick Brock Vereen and sixth-round pick David Fales to four-year contracts Monday. Terms were not available.

Vereen, a 5-11, 199-pound safety out of Minnesota, was selected with the 131st pick after starting 36 games in four years. The Bears value his versatility. In college, Vereen started seven games at strong safety, 11 at free safety, four at left cornerback and 14 at right cornerback.

The 6-2, 212-pound Fales, chosen 183rd overall, threw for 8,382 yards and 66 touchdowns at San Jose State. He is expected to compete with Jordan Palmer and Jerrod Johnson for a backup spot.

The collective-bargaining agreement has standardized the rookie pay scale. San Francisco 49ers running back Marcus Lattimore, the 131st pick last year, signed a four-year, $2.46 million deal that included a signing bonus of about $300,000.

Saints defensive end Rufus Johnson, picked 183rd last season, signed a four-year contract worth $2.26 million with about $100,000 guaranteed.

Draftees, undrafted free agents and tryout players will participate in a rookie minicamp Friday-Sunday at Halas Hall.
