Winger Brandon Bollig was suspended two games by the NHL’s department of player safety for boarding the Wild’s Keith Ballard late in the second period of Game 4. Ballard went face-first into the glass and was slow to get up before skating off under his own power. He didn’t return and won’t play in Game 5. Ballard suffered a concussion in October and recently had returned from a groin injury that sidelined him for two months.
‘‘Bollig [was] in control of this check throughout the play,’’ the NHL said in a video explaining the ruling. ‘‘The onus is entirely on Bollig to ensure that he avoids this check completely or, at the very least, attempts to minimize contact. He does neither. Instead, Bollig loads up and delivers a forceful blow through Ballard’s back.’’
Bollig was assessed a two-minute minor for boarding.
