Tuesday rolls around

Updated: April 19, 2011 5:13AM

Every one of the 70 league members takes advantage of Bluebird owner Bill Brennan Jr.’s offer to pay the $3 entry fee during Champs Week.

‘‘Our family bought the center eight years ago on Dec. 17,’’ Brennan Jr. said, “and from the start, we wanted to get as many leagues involved in Champs as possible.’’

As a 100 percent participation league, the Sunday Morning Men will send at least one bowler to the sectional round in February.

Mickey Janulis advanced in 2007 and eventually finished 12th in the men’s finals.

‘‘It’s a good experience,’’ said the 52-year-old auto body technician from Justice. “Whoever figures out the shot best, does the best. Everyone has an equal chance.’’

Janulis, who averages 183 on Sunday mornings, offered some advice to other bowlers who will try to qualify for the sectionals this week.

‘‘Make all your spares,’’ he said. ‘‘The strikes will come naturally.’’

Last year’s women’s champion, Teresa Sowell, also qualified out of a 100 percent league at Bluebird. Sowell not only won a new Ford Focus, courtesy of the Chicagoland Ford Dealers, but also a $500 bonus for her league’s prize fund.

‘‘Our bowlers get pretty hyped up for Champs Week,’’ Brennan said. ‘‘They all want to try to win that car.’’

U.S. Open winners Kelly Kulick and Bill O’Neill will roll this year’s target scores this month at Habetler Lanes.

Nearly $2.7 million dollars have been raised for Chicagoland charities since Beat The Champions began in 1961.
