Young attackers Harry Shipp, Benji Joya and Quincy Amarikwa made Chris Rolfe and his high salary expendable.

On Wednesday the Fire cleared that money, sending Rolfe to D.C. United for allocation money. Rolfe, 31, spent eight seasons with the Fire over two stints in Chicago, scoring 48 goals in 178 games.

He started this season’s opener but only played one minute after because of a right foot injury. While he was recovering Shipp, Joya and Amarikwa emerged, meaning the Fire could jettison a player who made $248,333.33 last season without hurting much of their depth.

“It’s never easy trading any player that’s been here for that number of years and connected to the club and all those things. And a good player,” Fire coach Frank Yallop said. “But at some point you’ve got to make decisions that you think are going to help the club out. I think this is a decision that, we’re OK in that position now.”
