Irish get boost from return of Louis Nix, Chris Watt

Updated: December 11, 2013 6:51AM

PITTSBURGH — A couple of familiar faces returned to action for Notre Dame.

Louis Nix III was back at nose guard for the Irish. The junior missed the last two game because of knee tendinitis. Nix entered Saturday with 22 tackles.

Notre Dame’s offensive line also received a boost with the return of Chris Watt.

The left guard had appeared in 47 straight games and made 34 consecutive starts before missing the Navy game with a PCL tear.

Fresh face

Eilar Hardy was one of the starting safeties. It was the first start of his career. Hardy became the 17th Notre Dame defensive starter this season.

Perfect attendance

Left tackle Zack Martin started his 49th game of his Notre Dame career. Martin is one start away from tying the school record, set by offensive tackle Sam Young from 2006-09. Martin has started 47 games at left tackle and two at right tackle.

Scoring first

Notre Dame scored the game’s first points when Tommy Rees completed a 10-yard pass to DaVaris Daniels for a touchdown with 3:41 left in the first quarter. It’s the fourth time this season the Irish scored first.

Sneak preview

Saturday marked Notre Dame’s only game against an ACC opponent this season. Beginning in 2014, Notre Dame plays five ACC teams per season as part of an agreement with the league. The Irish came into the Pittsburgh game with an 11-1 record against teams currently in the ACC since 2010.
