Lance Briggs will miss around six weeks with a small fracture in his left shoulder, the Bears said Monday.

The linebacker left the game in the third quarter Sunday against the Washington Redskins.

Briggs won’t need surgery.

Coach Marc Trestman said either rookie Jon Bostic or James Anderson will call plays at linebacker in place of Briggs.

“We’re losing a great leader in Lance,” Trestman said. “That’s a loss that, arguably, we’re going to have to work very, very hard to recover.”

“I wish it wasn’t that severity of being out that long,” cornerback Tim Jennings said Monday at Halas Hall, “but that’s just giving guys opportunity to come in there and showcase their ability and to find out what type of team we have.”

Jennings said Briggs has been playing some of the best football of his career.

“He makes more plays than he leaves out there,” he said. “It’s going to be tough not having him out there, man, but hopefully we can get him back as soon as possible.”

The Bears have already lost three defensive starters — linebacker D.J. Williams and defensive tackles Henry Melton and Nate Collins — for the season.
