The NFL is considering a plan that would raise the top price of a Super Bowl ticket to $2,600, part of a rethinking of the game’s price structure that also would lower the price of the least expensive ticket to $500.
“Nothing has been approved; it’s under consideration,” Brian McCarthy, NFL vice president of communications, said Tuesday, adding that part of the motivation for raising the highest price is to better reflect the tickets’ actual market value.
“We are looking to close the gap between the face value of the ticket and its true value as reflected on the secondary market. The uniqueness of the Super Bowl in the New York/New Jersey (area) is also driving unprecedented demand and buzz.”
Super Bowl XLVIII is scheduled for Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium.
The proposed $2,600 ticket, which first was reported by The Wall Street Journal, would cover about 9,000 club seats with access to indoor eating areas.
General admission prices would rise from a high of $1,250 last year in New Orleans to $1,500, with the least expensive ticket dropping from $650 to $500. Forty percent of seats will be priced under $1,000, 30 percent of those at $800. Of the five price points for non-premium seats, three are higher than last season and two are lower. The diversity of prices is a departure from earlier in Super Bowl history, when most seats tended to be priced the same regardless of location.
To encourage 1,000 winners of a fan lottery to use their $500 tickets themselves rather than resell them for several times face value, they will have to go to a stadium gate to pick up their tickets on game day.
