Ty Cobb bat strikes out at auction

DETROIT — A baseball bat given by Tigers legend Ty Cobb to Detroit’s postmaster has failed to sell at auction.

Hunt Auctions says bids this week in New York failed to meet the reserve price for the century-old, 34.5-inch bat used by “The Georgia Peach.”

It belonged to William Nagel’s great-grandson, Duffy Ross. Nagel was a friend of Cobb’s who also sometimes threw batting practice to the Hall of Famer.

The estimated price range for the bat was $75,000 to $125,000.
