WESTERN SPRINGS — A day of celebration came to an abrupt halt early Friday when a van full of Blackhawks fans hit a tree and rolled onto its side near Clausen and Burlington avenues.
Hilary Remijas of Western Springs was walking her dog near the intersection just before 9 a.m. when she heard a squeal. She looked up to see the dark-colored van hit a tree and flip onto its side.
“The three people inside ran away,” said Remijas, who described the occupants of the van as young men, in their teens or 20s, all dressed in Blackhawks gear.
One of the young men, later identified as the driver, returned moments later, on foot, with his mother. He was questioned by Western Springs police and taken away in handcuffs.
The driver and two passengers appeared to have minor injuries and were taken for treatment to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, said Deputy Police Chief Brian Budds.
Traffic–related charges are pending against driver and the case remains under investigation, Budds said.
The crash, which occurred near the Western Springs Metra station, happened as thousands of Blackhawks fans crowded trains for the celebration in Grant Park.
