Northwestern basketball coach Chris Collins hasn’t coached a game for the Wildcats and already he is planning for the future—way into the future.
Collins and his staff hosted eighth grader Nojel Eastern for an unofficial visit Monday, according to Sean Connor, Eastern’s AAU coach at Full Package Athletics.
Connor said Eastern, an incoming freshman at Evanston High School, has also taken unofficial visits to DePaul and Indiana.
He has not had contact with Hoosiers coach Tom Crean, but Indiana has expressed interested in Eastern who has played with Full Package’s U-16 team. Oregon State has also contacted Connor with interest in recruiting Eastern.
Due to his age, schools are not permitted to initiate contact with Eastern. However if Eastern is on campus and brings himself to campus, coaches can talk to Eastern as much as they’d like, as was the case with Northwestern.
“Nojel’s name has been on the radar since he was in sixth grade,” Connor said. “So everybody has kind of been keeping close tabs on him and seeing how he’s developed and his body has gotten bigger and his skill-set continues to grow and his intelligence about the game continues to grow at a level that is way higher than his peers.”
Connor said that Eastern has not received any offers yet.
