THE NATIONAL NINE
1 The Brewers’ Ryan Braun leads the majors with three opposite-field homers.
2 Through Wednesday, the Brewers led the National League in home homers with 30 and the Braves lead with 31 road homers.
3 Of Mark Reynolds’ first 11 homers, 10 came in games won by the Indians.
4 The Diamondbacks have drawn at least one walk in each of their first 41 games this season, the longest streak in baseball.
5 In his first nine starts last season, A.J. Burnett had 50 strikeouts; this season he had a league-leading 72.
6 Justin Masterson has two 1-0 complete-game shutouts this season. The last Indians pitchers to have a pair of those in the same season were Buddy Black and Greg Swindell in 1989.
7 In White Sox losses, Adam Dunn is hitting .092 — not as bad as Victor Martinez’s .069 in Tigers defeats, but not good.
8 The Pirates are the best-hitting team in the majors from the seventh inning on at .273, but the Reds, hitting .237, had the most runs with 69.
9 Since 2009, Miguel Cabrera has hit .334 and Joe Mauer has hit .331, but the difference is that Miggy has hit 154 homers and driven in 514 while Mauer has hit 52 homers with 299 RBI.
CHICAGO NINE TO KNOW
1 Anthony Rizzo has shortened his swing. It shows in his numbers: he swung and missed on 34.2 percent of his swings in 2011, 20.9 percent in 2012 and 19.8 percent this season.
2 Jake Peavy is now 28-12 in May throughout his career, his winningest month. But he’s a combined 28-38 in Junes and Julys.
3 The White Sox and Cubs have each walked on 6.4 percent of their plate appearances; only the Royals have a lower rate at 6.3 percent.
4 Through Thursday, the Cubs and the White Sox had won on the same day three times in April and four times in May.
5 Starting to get a tad concerned that in his last three starts, Carlos Villanueva is 0-2 and has allowed 14 runs in 17.1 innings pitched and batters have a .377 BAA.
6 Travis Wood and the D-backs’ Patrick Corbin are the only two pitchers who have thrown quality starts each time out this season. They are both 8-for-8 in QS; Corbin is 6-0 while Wood is 4-2.
7 Of all the starters in the majors with at least six starts who have held batters to under a .225 batting average, none has a lower winning percentage than Jeff Samardzija, who despite a .222 BAA has a win-loss percentage of just .286 (2-5).
8 The speed of strikeout pitches to Alejandro De Aza seemingly makes no difference. Of his first 45 whiffs, 23 were on pitches 90 mph and faster and 22 were on pitches slower than 90.
9 The Cubs have struck out 41 times with runners in scoring position and less than two outs, the most in the NL.
