Loyola will lose two key players next season with the decision of guard Cully Payne and his brother, incoming freshman Quinten, to leave the program. There was no immediate indication where they might play next season.
Cully, from Schaumburg, had transferred to Loyola from Iowa before last season. Cully had his best game against DePaul in December, leading the Ramblers to a 69-61 victory with 24 points, but he missed the last month of the season with an injured left hand injury.
‘‘Cully has indicated to me that he will not return for his senior season, and subsequently, Quinten has asked for a release,’’ coach Porter Moser said in a statement. ‘‘We wish Cully and Quinten nothing but the best in their future endeavors.’’
Cully had a strong freshman season with Iowa before a hernia sidelined him for his sophomore season. He transferred to Loyola but had to sit out the 2011-12 season under NCAA rules.
Quinten averaged 16.9 points and 6.7 rebounds in his junior year at St. Charles North, during which he committed to Loyola in hopes of playing beside his brother next season.
The Ramblers likely will turn to freshman Jeff White to play point guard next season. White played extensively while Payne was injured.
