After a long and distinguished run with the Bears, special teams coordinator Dave Toub is expected to make a lateral move to the Kansas City Chiefs, two league sources said.
Toub oversaw special teams for all nine of Lovie Smith’s seasons with the Bears, and he consistently had among the strongest units in the NFL.
Toub interviewed for the Miami Dolphins head coaching vacancy last offseason, and he interviewed to replace Smith but was considered a longshot. Since he wasn’t going to get the head coaching job, Bears general manager Phil Emery may have allowed Toub the option to make a lateral move.
It would have been awkward, to say the least, if Toub missed on the head coach job and remained as the special teams coordinator.
The Bears also likely save some money because Toub was believed to be among the highest-paid special teams coordinators in the league.
Before joining the Bears, Toub worked for Andy Reid in Philadelphia. After the Eagles fired him earlier this month, Reid was hired as the new head coach of the Chiefs.
The two have a long history together, one that dates to the 1980s.
Toub also interviewed for a position with the Carolina Panthers last week.
