Thanks to all the Twitter mentions he gets, wide receiver Brandon Marshall knew what he had accomplished Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. He just had to tell somebody.
Why not good friend Jay Cutler?
“In the third quarter, I leaned over to Jay and said, ‘That catch puts me at 1,000 yards for six seasons in a row,’ ” a smiling Marshall said. “He looked at me and said, ‘You’re disgusting.’ ”
Jokes aside, the Vikings probably felt that way after Marshall had 12 catches for 92 yards — including some in tight coverage and on third down — in the Bears’ 28-10 victory at Soldier Field.
With 81 catches, 1,017 receiving yards and eight touchdowns with five games left, Marshall remains on track to rewrite the Bears’ receiving records for a season. He became the first Bears receiver to reach 1,000 receiving yards since Marty Booker in 2002.
Marcus Robinson’s 1,400 receiving yards in 1999 are well within reach for Marshall, who averages more than 92 receiving yards per game. Does Marshall know who holds the Bears’ record for catches in a season?
“100. Marty Booker. 2001,” said Marshall, the ninth player in Bears history to reach 1,000 receiving yards. “I know this because I hear it from you guys [the media] all the time. Twitter is amazing social media.”
Against the Vikings, the most impressive aspect of Marshall’s performance was the catches he made with Antoine Winfield and others draped all over him.
“Brandon was catching some ridiculous passes,” defensive tackle Henry Melton said. “We have the best view in the house. It was cool.”
Marshall was able to box out opponents with his larger frame.
“I’m not the fastest guy; I don’t jump the highest,” Marshall said. “So one of the things my father taught me was how to use my body, be crafty.’’
