College basketball roundup: Sobolewski helps Northwestern dodge Devils

Northwestern (2-0) got key late baskets Thursday from sophomore guard Dave Sobolewski to pull out an 81-68 victory against visiting Mississippi Valley (0-3).
Junior transfer Davon Usher scored 35 to almost single-handedly keep the Delta Devils in the game.
Sobolewski scored his first field goal of the season on a layup to break a 58-58 tie midway through the second half, moments after Usher had hit a three-point shot from the right corner to knot the score.
Sobolewski scored all 13 of his points, including two three-point baskets, down the stretch. Reggie Hearn had 23 and Jared Swopshire added 22 for the Wildcats, who needed a 23-10 spurt in the final 8:54 to win.

James Bell hit two three-pointers in overtime after going 1-for-8 from beyond the arc in regulation for the Wildcats (3-0), who moved into the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic in New York. D.J. Byrd scored 16 for the Boilermakers (1-2).

Brandon Ubel scored 17, Ray Gallegos added 14 and the host Cornhuskers (2-0) overcame a late scoring drought to hold off the cold-shooting Crusaders (2-1).

Christian Watford scored 23 as the No. 1 Hoosiers (3-0) crushed the visiting Bearkats (1-2) in the Progressive Legends Classic.
