10/10: Midwest Fishing Report

SHORELINE SALMON/TROUT: Action is fair; best around southern Lake Michigan appears to be Milwaukee. CHICAGO: It has been very slow. Finally, three were caught Tuesday morning at Montrose, according to Mike Repa at Park Bait. NORTHWEST INDIANA: Ed McCain at Mik-Lurch reported a few kings at the Hole in the Wall and Buffington, mostly on Lucky Crafts or Moonshine spoons. SOUTHEAST WISCONSIN: As the Fish of the Week tale shows, Milwaukee has had some spectacular action. In Racine, the Wisconsin DNR reported inconsistent action for Chinook on glow spoons or spawn sacs. SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN: Tyler Harmon messaged that a few salmon and steelhead are being caught. There is more fishing than fish being hooked.

CHAIN O’LAKES AREA: Triangle reported walleye (on a minnow bite and moving toward current areas) and crappie (moving into the channels) as the top bites.

COOLING LAKES: LaSalle’s last day of fishing is Sunday. Heidecke and Braidwood are closed.

DES PLAINES RIVER: Marcus Benesch reported good pike and some big largemouth north and active bass south.

ILLINOIS RIVER: STARVED ROCK AREA: Time on the Water Outdoors reported sauger biting (mostly small) and fair white bass around rip-rap and mouths of creeks, including up the Vermilion.

KANKAKEE RIVER: River is very low, but there’s good fishing. Nick Carr at the Trading Post said walleye (evenings and mornings) are the top bite. Ed Mullady reported good pike, especially around
in-water logs and mouths of creeks. Smallmouth quit chasing; it is now jig/twister fished just off the bottom.

NORTHWEST INDIANA: Mik-Lurch
reported variable shoreline salmon (above). Creeks have some fish but are extremely low. Crappie and walleye are beginning in the corn channel of Wolf Lake. Willow Slough closes to boats Thursday.
