The best news from the Blackhawks Convention came out of Marian Hossa’s mouth when he said he’s symptom-free after suffering the first severe concussion of his career.
“The way I feel right now, I believe I’ll be ready for [training] camp,” the winger said on the first day of the convention Friday at the Hilton Chicago.
Hossa said he has been training “at a high level” for about a month, including running, biking and weight-lifting. But he still is taking a cautious path. Hossa understands things can change once he gets on the ice.
“The time will come soon when I step on the ice,” Hossa said. “Everything can be different on the ice when I get the first hit or if somebody just pushes me.”
As for the Phoenix Coyotes’ Raffi Torres, who delivered the illegal shoulder-to-head hit that caused the concussion, Hossa said he was upset with him at first but now looks ahead.
Torres’ 25-game suspension was shortened to 21 by commissioner Gary Bettman after an appeal.
“I’m sure he’s going to learn still, sitting out 21 games,” Hossa said.
Hossa said he isn’t thinking too much about the long-term effects of the concussion. He just wants to get on the ice.
“Things are right now on the level where I want it to be,” Hossa said. “I’m happy where I am.”
