The Houston Rockets and Omer Asik have agreed to a three-year, $25 million offer sheet, sources have confirmed. The proposed deal would pay the Bulls backup center approximately $5 million next season, $5 the following season and a whopping $15 million in the third year.
If the Bulls match, which they are expected to do, it would virtually guarantee that Carlos Boozer’s contract would have to be amnestied after the 2013-14 season. The Bulls will have three days to match the Rockets’ offer once Asik signs the offer sheet July 11.
Asik appeared in every game for the Bulls last season and averaged 3.1 points and 5.3 rebounds while backing up Joakim Noah.
The Bulls’ frontcourt depth is perhaps their greatest strength, and Asik’s interior defense is critical to the success of coach Tom Thibodeau’s defense.
