The Sky said Monday it had re-signed center Sylvia Fowles to a multiyear contract. The team didn’t disclose terms of the deal.
Fowles, the WNBA’s reigning defensive player of the year, started all 34 games for the Sky last season and averaged 20 points, 10.2 rebounds and two blocked shots. She led the league in blocked shots and field-goal percentage (.591) and finished second in rebounding and third in scoring.
‘‘I am thrilled to be a member of the Chicago Sky for years to come,’’ Fowles, a three-time All-Star in four seasons with the Sky, said in a statement. ‘‘The organization is committed to success, and coach [Pokey] Chatman has made all the right moves in the offseason to build long-term success. I am eager to be a part of that.
‘‘I love the city of Chicago and truly enjoy playing in front of the loyal and loud Sky fans. I am excited to get on the court with the talented roster of players who will be surrounding me, and our fans should expect big things from us in 2012.’’
In other Sky news, the team selected Temple guard Shey Peddy in the second round (23rd overall) and
Texas A&M guard Sydney Carter in the third round (27th overall) of the WNBA draft. The Sky didn’t have a first-round pick, having traded it to the Seattle Storm.
Among players of local
interest, Notre Dame forward Devereaux Peters (Fenwick) was selected third overall by the Minnesota Lynx, Notre Dame guard Natalie Novosel was picked eighth overall by the Washington Mystics and DePaul forward Keisha Hampton was chosen 22nd overall by the Storm.
