Cubs 3,
Angels 3 (10)
For the record
Lefty Paul Maholm made his final Cactus League start before his debut April 10 against the Brewers. He gave up two runs on a first-pitch homer in the first inning to Albert Pujols and left the game with a runner at third and two out in the fifth. He struck out six. He’ll stay behind when the team breaks camp to make one tuneup start on the minor-league side before rejoining the club for Opening Day.
Running man
With runners at the corners and two out in the sixth, the Cubs scored the tying run when catcher Steve Clevenger took off for second and drew the Angels into a rundown. Reed Johnson scored before Clevenger was tagged.
Short story
Darwin Barney, the starting second baseman who also serves as shortstop Starlin Castro’s backup, made his fourth start of the spring at short. He committed his third error there when he backed up and let a short, soft liner play him.
Closer watch
Carlos Marmol recorded his sixth consecutive scoreless outing since a “great meeting” with manager Dale Sveum early in camp. He had his first 1-2-3 inning since his first spring outing March 4.
On deck
Cubs (14-16) at Angels (17-10), 3:05 p.m., cubs.com (audio). Chris Rusin and Shawn Camp are scheduled to pitch.
