DETROIT — Coach Joel Quenneville can’t explain why the Blackhawks’ backup goalie is leading the way down the stretch for the third consecutive season. It’s just the way it is, with Ray Emery seemingly in control right now.

‘‘Once is probably plenty,’’ Quenneville said. ‘‘Twice is a lot. Three is unusual. It’s all coincidental. That’s the way it seems to be working.’’

Emery turned in another solid performance with 23 saves in a 2-1 victory Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings. He benefitted from a couple of shots off the posts, but he also made a handful of key stops, especially in the first 40 minutes.

‘‘Each game is a new challenge,’’ Emery said. ‘‘We know it’s a tough team in this building.’’

Emery has allowed three goals in his last eight periods since taking over for Corey Crawford on Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

‘‘He’s been real good for us,’’ Quenneville said. ‘‘The defense [and] the whole team game are comfortable [with him], as well. He’s square. His rebound control has been very efficient.’’
