The wife of former Bears Pro Bowl defensive tackle Tommie Harris needed a miracle.
But Ashley Harris died two days after she entered an Oklahoma hospital because of a stroke or a brain aneurysm.
She was 29 years old.
“We are holding on for a miracle,” family friend Bill Horn told the Sun-Times Sunday afternoon.
Later in the evening, though, Horn said she had passed.
Ashley married Tommie in January, and she delivered the couple’s second child four months ago.
The 14th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft, Harris starred for the Bears and earned three trips to the Pro Bowl. He was ideally suited for coach Lovie Smith’s defense, but he was slowed by injuries in recent years.
Harris was released in February 2011, and he had a brief stint with the Indianapolis Colts before finishing the season with the San Diego Chargers.
He played in 13 games and had three sacks.
Harris remains popular with Bears teammates, and several rushed to be with him in Oklahoma in recent days.
