SOCHI, Russia — This wasn’t one of Jonathan Toews’ ordinary goal celebrations — a stoic look and a mild, cool and confident fist shake. No, this was one of those howling, one-knee, ferocious fist-pump jobs. It was the kind of reaction Toews only busts out for the big ones — playoff goals, game-winning goals and, yes, golden goals. Canada won its second consecutive Olympic gold medal Sunday at Bolshoy Ice Dome, beating Sweden 3-0 with a ruthless and relentless style that left the depleted Swedes grasping and gasping for air. And, as he did in 2010 in Vancouver, Toews got … ]]> Mon, 24 Feb 2014 10:49:27 -0600 <![CDATA[ Michael Phelps suspended 6 months by USA Swimming ]]> Lead story image

USA Swimming has suspended Michael Phelps for six months, forced him to withdraw from next year’s world championships and taken away his funding from the sport’s national governing body as a result of the Olympic champion’s second DUI arrest. The sanctions announced Monday won’t keep Phelps from training with his North Baltimore club, but he won’t be allowed to participate in USA Swimming-sanctioned meets through March 6, 2015. Phelps and USA Swimming also agreed that he won’t compete in the world swimming championships in Russia next July. His monthly funding stipends will be stopped during the suspension. Putting his swimming career on hold after his second DUI arrest, Olympic champion Michael Phelps began a six-week program Sunday that he said “will provide the help I need to better understand myself.” The winningest athlete in Olympic history made the announcement in a series of posts on his Twitter account. According to his representatives at Octagon, Phelps entered an in-patient program that will keep him from competing at least through mid-November, though there’s no indication he plans to give up swimming. “The past few days have been extremely difficult,” Phelps said in a statement. “I recognize that this is … ]]> Sun, 05 Oct 2014 16:58:00 -0600 <![CDATA[ Almaty, Beijing, Oslo make list for 2022 Olympics ]]> Lead story image

MORRISSEY: The people were gracious. Language was a challenge but not an impediment. I never had to wait more than five minutes for a bus. Trains were on time. SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Teemu Selanne scored two goals and Tuukka Rask had a 27-save shutout, helping Finland rout the United States 5-0 Saturday to win hockey bronze at the Sochi Games. Selanne, a 43-year-old, six-time Olympian, and Jussi Jokinen scored 11 seconds apart early in pivotal second period after a scoreless first. The Finns had three goals in the third against a team that looked like it would rather be at home. Finland has won four medals in the last five Olympics, more than any other nation in the NHL era. SOCHI, Russia — After the missed breakaway in overtime against Russia, and the lost handle on his first penalty shot on Saturday, this was no-nonsense Patrick Kane. No dekes, no fancy footwork, no deception. Given a second penalty shot in the second period, Kane walked in on Finland goaltender Tuukka Rask and simply fired. Beat him, too. But the shot hit the top of the right post, the rebound fluttering high through the air and landing, remarkably, right in Kane’s glove. He swatted the insolent puck away and trudged back to the bench as a clever organist played “Take Me … ]]> Mon, 24 Feb 2014 22:20:10 -0600 <![CDATA[ MORRISSEY: Yeah, the score was 1-0, but Canada blew out the U.S. ]]> Lead story image

MARK LAZERUS: Patrick Kane stood there, his head sagging just a bit, trying to make sense of what had just happened — how his high-flying team had just been completely shut down, how his dream of winning a gold medal had just been dashed, again, by his nearest rivals and a few of his closest friends. ]]> Sun, 23 Mar 2014 06:16:59 -0600 <![CDATA[ U.S. men’s hockey — a roster of stars that became a team ]]> Lead story image

SOCHI, Russia — What amazes Zach Parise most about his American teammates at the Olympics isn’t how they’re scoring at will in a tournament marked by defensive dogfights. It’s not how Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk have dominated on the bigger ice. In fact, it’s not anything that happens on the ice. It’s what happens on the bench — guys leaping in the air after goals, roaring when a teammate sacrifices himself to block a shot, congratulating and encouraging players as they come back to the bench. In a tournament full of all-star teams, the United States has built … ]]> Sat, 22 Mar 2014 06:40:57 -0600 <![CDATA[ U.S. women’s stunning gold-medal hockey game loss ‘tough to swallow’ ]]> Lead story image

SOCHI, Russia — As Canada’s players leapt into each other’s arms, Team USA’s players fell into each other’s arms. And as the giddy Canadians hugged, the gutted Americans huddled around their leader, Julie Chu, a veteran of four Olympics. And three silver medals. “There’s nothing to be ashamed of today,” Chu told them. “Be proud of the way we played. Be proud of the team we are.” Proud? Absolutely. But devastated, too. Less than four minutes from ending Canada’s stranglehold on gold in women’s hockey, Team USA let a two-goal lead slip away, and lost 3-2 in overtime on Marie-Philip … ]]> Sat, 22 Mar 2014 06:40:59 -0600 <![CDATA[ Supposed hockey rivals U.S. and Canada are killing us with kindness ]]> Lead story image

SOCHI, Russia — This is when you wish hockey players were trash talkers. The United States will face Canada on a sheet of ice Friday night for the chance to play for an Olympic gold medal. It’s about as big as a hockey game can get. It would make for much more drama if puck relations between the two countries were under a frost warning, but there doesn’t appear to be one in sight. A mutual respect is pervasive here, which is fine if you’re into that sort of thing. The rivalry could be helped along by an American player … ]]> Sat, 22 Mar 2014 06:44:28 -0600 <![CDATA[ Sotnikova pulls off stunner, gives Russia first gold in women’s figure skating ]]> Lead story image

Bursting from the shadow of her adored teammate, Adelina Sotnikova gave Russia its first gold medal in women’s Olympic figure skating. While much-heralded Julia Lipnitskaia stumbled, Sotnikova soared. When she won the free skate Thursday at the Sochi Games, she denied South Korea’s Yuna Kim from defending her title and confirmed Russian command of the sport once more. “This is the happiest day in my life,” Sotnikova, 17, said. “I simply stepped on the ice today and realized how much I like what I’m doing and skated really good.” The Russians have won three figure skating gold medals at these … ]]> Sat, 22 Mar 2014 06:41:17 -0600 <![CDATA[ U.S. vs. Canada for chance to play in gold-medal game at Sochi ]]> Lead story image

SOCHI, Russia — No, it wasn’t guaranteed that the United States and Canada would meet again in the Olympics, four years removed from their epic gold-medal clash in Vancouver. Heck, while the United States was stomping the Czech Republic 5-2, Canada was locked in a stunning battle against Latvia, needing a late goal by Shea Weber just to escape with a 2-1 victory. United States-Latvia for a shot at gold just wouldn’t have the same ring to it, would it? But here they are, two titans, ready for the rematch. Team USA vs. Team Canada.
