It’s a nice badge to carry into the playoffs: The team no one wants to play. It even has a tinge of intimidation to it, that is, if the Bulls were actually facing a team that was susceptible to intimidation. But they aren’t. The Washington Wizards have little to lose, especially when all they’ve been hearing is they’re destined for elimination by next week. “Why would they pick us?’’ Wizards center Marcin Gortat told the Washington Post on Friday when asked about all the predictions from the so-called experts favoring the Bulls. “First of all, Chicago is an experienced team. … ]]> Sun, 20 Apr 2014 13:22:44 -0500 <![CDATA[ Tom Thibodeau unconcerned that Joakim Noah missed practice ]]> Lead story image

Joakim Noah has said on several occasions that this was the toughest NBA season he’s ever gone through. It didn’t get any easier for the Bulls center last week. Noah returned to practice Saturday after missing practice Friday. The All-Star center flew to New York to mourn the passing of his mentor, Tyrone Green. Noah was unavailable for comment after practice Saturday, but he released a statement about Green’s passing. “I am saddened by the passing of Mr. Green, who was like a second father to me,’’ Noah’s statement read. Kirk Hinrich was John Wall’s teammate during the 2010-11 season. In Hinrich years, that’s a long time ago, a lot of ice tubs and taped body parts ago. “No, nothing like that,’’ Hinrich said Friday when asked if he helped mentor Wall, a rookie that season. “The relationship was good. I got along great with him. You could tell he had great athleticism, great talent but also a knack for playing the point-guard position. “[Former NBA guard] Sam Cassell was there, too. He did a lot of the mentoring. If I taught him anything, it was probably just by example.’’ … ]]> Sat, 19 Apr 2014 02:15:05 -0500 <![CDATA[ Bulls vs. Wizards preview, prediction ]]> Lead story image

EASTERN CONFERENCE (8) Hawks vs. (1) Pacers Season series: 2-2. Most intriguing matchup: The Pacers (November through January) vs. the Pacers (February through March): If this series could end in three games, it would, but unfortunately in this best-of-seven first-round meeting, the Pacers have to show they again can be the team that no one wanted to play before the All-Star break. That was a long time ago. Prediction: Pacers in four. (7) Bobcats vs. (2) Heat Season series: 4-0 Heat. Most intriguing matchup: Al Jefferson vs. Chris Bosh: “Big Al’’ scored 38 points and had 19 rebounds in their … ]]> Thu, 17 Apr 2014 22:56:14 -0500 <![CDATA[ Bulls will face Wizards in playoffs, Game 1 on Sunday ]]> Lead story image

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — So it’s the Washington Wizards. Who cares if the Bulls are going into the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs off a 91-86 overtime loss Wednesday against the Charlotte Bobcats? It’s the playoffs. It’s a No.  4 seed. It’s home-court advantage in the first round and a chance to face off against the top-seeded Indiana Pacers in Round 2. In some ways, it’s actually pretty remarkable. After losing star Derrick Rose on Nov. 22 after just 10 games, then trading Luol Deng in early January, this team was left for dead. Even after losing two of their … ]]> Wed, 16 Apr 2014 22:31:37 -0500 <![CDATA[ Bulls prefer rhythm over rest ]]> Lead story image

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Suddenly, all the complaints about coach Tom Thibodeau and the pacing of his team died down as the regular season ended. His starters’ minutes haven’t been as extreme, and, more significant, the Bulls aren’t crawling into the playoffs held together by gum and tape. “Well, we had a lot of injuries early on,’’ Thibodeau said Wednesday. “Sometimes you have no control over that. That contributed heavily to getting off to a slow start. Guys didn’t have their rhythm. ‘‘I think it’s important to be as healthy as you can be going down the stretch. Disappointment shouldn’t linger at this point in the season. And when your coach is Tom Thibodeau, it’s just about forbidden. After the Bulls fell short Sunday in New York in what center Joakim Noah called “the biggest game of the season,’’ you figured it was going to be a long night for the Magic. Thanks to 22 points from Mike Dunleavy, the Bulls (48-33) beat Orlando 108-95 at the United Center on Monday in the last home game of the regular season. Was there really any doubt there would be a bounce-back?
