CLEVELAND — First, the Cavaliers got LeBron James’ word. Then they got his signature. James signed a two-year, $42.1 million contract with the Cavs on Saturday, a day after he announced he was returning to play in Cleveland and try to end the city’s 50-year championship drought. The deal provides flexibility for the NBA’s biggest star with the league’s maximum salary expected to rise in the future. A person familiar with the negotiations said James’ contract includes an option for the four-time league MVP to become a free agent next summer. However, it is strictly “a business deal,” according to … ]]> Sun, 13 Jul 2014 00:11:03 -0500 http://www.suntimes.com/sports/basketball/28630737-419/lebron-james-signs-two-year-contract-with-cavaliers.html http://www.suntimes.com/sports/basketball/28630737-419/lebron-james-signs-two-year-contract-with-cavaliers.html <![CDATA[ Lakers’ Steve Nash out for season with back injury ]]> Lead story image

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Nash has been ruled out for the season with a back injury, putting the two-time NBA MVP’s career in doubt. The Lakers and Nash announced their decision Thursday, less than a week before the start of the 40-year-old Nash’s 19th NBA season. Nash played in just 15 games last season with nerve root irritation, but had high hopes for a comeback season after several months of rehabilitation. Instead, the Canadian point guard strained his back while carrying bags several days ago. Nash and the Lakers apparently determined he couldn’t return this season. … ]]> Thu, 23 Oct 2014 19:50:00 -0500 http://www.suntimes.com/sports/basketball/30614290-419/lakers-steve-nash-out-for-season-with-back-injury.html http://www.suntimes.com/sports/basketball/30614290-419/lakers-steve-nash-out-for-season-with-back-injury.html <![CDATA[ NBA extends TV contracts with ESPN, TNT through 2025 ]]> Lead story image

NEW YORK — The NBA and its television partners couldn’t wait to extend their contracts. The league renewed its deals with ESPN and TNT even though two seasons remain on the old ones. INDIANAPOLIS — NBA star Paul George got the message quickly Thursday. After tweeting that Ray Rice should be allowed to continue his NFL career and suggesting he was merely responding to being attacked, George backtracked Thursday, replacing his deleted comments with an apology to women and victims of domestic violence. Rice was released by the Baltimore Ravens on Monday and suspended indefinitely by the NFL after an elevator video showed Rice knocking out his then-fiancee with a punch to the face. It’s scary to think that a head-shot photo in a newspaper could imply knowledge or wisdom.
