Where is David Stern when you need him? In 2011, he vetoed a three-team deal that would’ve sent Chris Paul to the Lakers because he determined it wasn’t in the best interests of the league-owned Hornets at the time. So how is it in the best interests of the league now to have Phil Jackson running the Knicks and Jeanie Buss running the Lakers? There’s this really tall new commissioner, Adam Silver, who looks really small if he’s going to permit the engaged lovebirds to run different teams from the same king-sized bed. MIAMI — LeBron James scored a career-high 61 points, breaking Glen Rice’s franchise record, and the Miami Heat defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 124-107 on Monday night. James made 22 of 33 shots from the field, including his first eight 3-point attempts. His career best had been 56 points, on March 20, 2005, for Cleveland against Toronto. Rice scored 56 to set the Heat record on April 15, 1995, against Orlando. James had 24 points at halftime, then added 25 in the third quarter. The record-breaker came with 5:46 left, when James spun through three defenders for a layup that fell … ]]> Mon, 03 Mar 2014 23:17:49 -0500 <![CDATA[ Jason Collins, openly gay player, signs with Nets ]]> Lead story image

Jason Collins became the NBA’s first active openly gay player Sunday, signing a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets. Collins will join the Nets for their game Sunday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers. The 35-year-old center revealed at the end of last season he is gay, but he was a free agent and had remained unsigned. With a need for another big man, the Nets turned to the 7-foot Collins, who helped them reach two NBA Finals in the early 2000s. “The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision,” general manager Billy King said in a statement. … ]]> Sun, 23 Feb 2014 14:48:15 -0500 <![CDATA[ Noah has 8 points, 5 rebounds in East’s NBA All-Star Game victory ]]> Lead story image

NEW ORLEANS — When it was an All-Star game, Joakim Noah couldn’t have been much more out of his element — the Bulls center was lost in a maze of fast-breaks, alley-oop dunks, three-point shots and virtually no defense. But then it became a basketball game. And Noah became a factor. The Bulls center, a bit part in the first half, played a key supporting role to Kyrie Irving’s 31-point, 14-assist MVP performance that led the East to a 163-155 victory over the West in the NBA All-Star Game at Smoothie King Center. ‘‘It ended up being competitive. NEW ORLEANS — About those sleeved jerseys, Adam Silver ... ‘‘From a fan standpoint, the greatest indicator is how are they selling? And ... we’re having trouble keeping them in the stores,’’ Silver said prior to All-Star Saturday Night at the Smoothie King Center. ‘‘There’s enormous demand for those jerseys. Fans like them. And I happen to like them, too.’’ Judging by the less-than-urgent subject matter tossed Silver’s way in his first press conference as the NBA’s new commissioner — broadcast television coverage, tanking, replay, sleeved jerseys, international expansion and the draft lottery — Silver’s mandate as David Stern’s successor … ]]> Sun, 16 Feb 2014 18:24:22 -0500 <![CDATA[ Tom Gola, basketball great, dead at 81 ]]> Lead story image

It’s the NBA’s dirty little secret, and it’s only getting dirtier. As much as media members, league executives and coaches want to downplay the recruiting that goes on between players from different teams trying to manipulate the system and join forces to chase a title, the practice is alive and well this season, maybe more than ever. There’s a successful model in place in Miami, where the Heat is going for a three-peat, and the expected free-agent class next summer is filled with franchise-changers.
