NEIL STEINBERG: At the stroke of midnight ushering in 2012, Michael Smith, was among the Chicagoans who fired a gun in to the air. According to police, when officers caught up to him he ran and at some point during the chase Smith raised his gun. Police shot him and Smith became the first Chicagoan to die by the bullet in 2012.

A man in his 50s died after being shot Sunday evening in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood just before 6 p.m. in the 6600 block of South Blackstone in what may have been a drive-by shooting, police said. He was the eighth person to be killed in violence in the city this weekend.

A 15-year-old who allegedly pointed a gun at officers was shot in the head by police last week in the South Side’s Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, authorities said. Officers near the 6700 block of South Indiana said they saw Dakota Bright with a handgun about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. The officers approached, but Dakota fled on foot and the officers chased him, according a statement from the Chicago Police. During the pursuit, the officers shot Dakota. At least one man died and seven people were injured in shootings on the city’s South and West sides between Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Just before 1 p.m. on Saturday, Anthony Bagsby, 20, was shot multiple times in the 2600 block of East 79th Street, authorities said. Bagsby, of the 7400 block of South Shore Drive, died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital several hours later. Two men were killed and at least six other people were wounded in gun violence across the city since early Saturday. Seven of the shootings took place in the span of about three hours. One young man was killed and another wounded in a shooting Sunday morning in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Police were called at approximately 10:15 a.m. for the shooting in the 1100 block of North Keystone Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.
