Success must have been written in the stars for the Adler Planetarium’s 10th annual Celestial Ball on Sept. 8. More than 800 partygoers — including Jim Lovell, the commander of NASA’s Apollo 13 mission — filled the planetarium’s Café Galileo and the adjacent Sundial Terrace, which offered a sweeping view of the Chicago skyline. Attendants dressed as astronauts sold raffle tickets and encouraged guests to bid on auction items, including an adorable puppy named Luna. Co-chairmen Erika Bartelstein, Donna More, Laura Myntti and Meg Sauer were thrilled as the evening rocketed past the $1.2 million fund-raising target before the silent … ]]> Wed, 17 Oct 2012 06:16:42 -0600 <![CDATA[ Hot for Trotter ]]> Lead story image

Twenty-five years after opening the doors to his eponymous restaurant, internationally renowned chef Charlie Trotter shut them for the last time on Friday, Aug. 31. Legendary Bears coach Mike Ditka welcomed more than 100 guests to his steakhouse (100 E. Chestnut) last Tuesday night. The sit-down dinner was in support of Kids Have Hope, an organization founded in 2009 that helps tackle issues of childhood physical and sexual abuse. The $15,000 raised will go toward educating children about abuse. “We want to give kids their own armor so they know how to prevent abuse themselves,” said the organization’s founder, Melissa Curk. Ditka took the mike before dinner, adding, “Anything you can do to help a kid on the right path in life is important.” As … ]]> Fri, 05 Oct 2012 06:04:33 -0600 <![CDATA[ Gold Rush ]]> Lead story image

Olympic sensation Ryan Lochte and teammate Conor Dwyer may have left their medals at home, but they still partied like champions on Tuesday night to celebrate Hennessy cognac’s latest ad campaign, themed “Wild Rabbit.” Fans and partygoers lined up outside of hip West Loop event space Venue One (1044 W. Randolph) hours before doors opened, eager for a chance to hang with the superstar athletes and hear live performances by Erykah Badu, Mayer Hawthorne and A$AP Rocky. The campaign is all about pushing your limits and driving for success, so we had to ask: What’s Lochte’s wild rabbit? “For me, … ]]> Mon, 01 Oct 2012 17:13:22 -0600
