As Chicago area residents cringed under an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow on Sunday and the promise of brutally cold temperatures this week, city cleanup crews continued to plow streets. ]]> Mon, 21 May 2012 10:03:09 -0500 http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3692526-418/chicago-area-prepares-for-brutal-cold.html http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3692526-418/chicago-area-prepares-for-brutal-cold.html <![CDATA[ New Lake Shore Drive song ]]> Lead story image

When all the cars got stuck last week on Lake Shore Drive, Skip Haynes’ phone started ringing. Chicagoans will remember that back in 1971, Haynes had a hit with his song “Lake Shore Drive,” recorded by the Chicago trio, Aliotta-Haynes-Jeremiah. Now, his friends thought he should update it. ]]> Mon, 21 May 2012 10:03:09 -0500 http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3692544-418/drive-haynes-song-lake-shore.html http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3692544-418/drive-haynes-song-lake-shore.html <![CDATA[ Video Test 5/21/12 ]]>

The blizzard that ate Chicago hurt more than the pride of motorists caught in snowdrifts on Lake Shore Drive; it cost millions in lost retail revenues and pummeled already reeling hourly workers and city and suburban municipalities, experts say. A single day of crippled businesses in February likely cost the city of Chicago $55 million to $60 million, and the six-county metro area as much as $300 million, said John C. Melaniphy, head of Chicago retail consulting firm Melaniphy & Associates Inc. Melaniphy based his calculations on his company’s yearly spending reports. Because many businesses were nearly as incapacitated for … ]]> Sat, 21 May 2011 05:14:42 -0500 http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3647869-420/blizzard-million-chicago-melaniphy-retail.html http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3647869-420/blizzard-million-chicago-melaniphy-retail.html <![CDATA[ Heroic efforts help us get through Blizzard of ‘11 ]]> Lead story image

It started for most with a mad dash home from work Tuesday afternoon as the worst snowstorm in 12 years was bearing down on the Chicago region. Rush hour started a few hours early. But for some, the trip home didn’t start early enough — and wouldn’t end until many hours later. Vehicles everywhere from Hampshire to Hobart couldn’t outpace the snowfall. Drivers were stranded until rescue crews — traveling in pickups, four-wheelers, snowplows, Humvees, armored vehicles, snowmobiles, you name it — could reach them. Others didn’t even go home. Police officers, firefighters, jail guards, hospital workers and others stayed … ]]> Mon, 21 May 2012 13:46:54 -0500 http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3659353-418/around-the-region-from-snow-blown-to-snowblowers.html http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3659353-418/around-the-region-from-snow-blown-to-snowblowers.html <![CDATA[ Saturn fires up despite engine full of snow ]]> Lead story image

Here’s another reason why Saturn drivers love their cars — and hated when GM discontinued production in 2009. Chandra Ewell and her Saturn got stuck on Lake Shore Drive during the blizzard Tuesday night. She spent hours near the Fullerton exit before running out of gas and being rescued by the Chicago Fire Department. The next day, she went to retrieve her car — only to find the engine compartment packed with snow. After the city gave her a free tank of gas, Ewell decided to give the ignition a try. Despite the snowy engine, when Ewell turned the key, … ]]> Sat, 07 May 2011 05:44:31 -0500 http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3657429-418/engine-ewell-lake-drive-gas.html http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3657429-418/engine-ewell-lake-drive-gas.html <![CDATA[ Storm dents church that survived Chicago Fire ]]> Lead story image

The historic Near West Side church survived the Chicago Fire, great gusts of wind that once pummeled its stained glass windows and now, the Blizzard of ’11. But high winds and violent snow blasts did collapse the roof of the First Baptist Congregational Church Tuesday night, sending a Gothic style tower crashing into the church’s balcony, vestibule and front entrance. ]]> Sun, 06 Mar 2011 00:20:57 -0500 http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3664232-418/church-fire-chicago-historic-survived.html http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3664232-418/church-fire-chicago-historic-survived.html <![CDATA[ City not enforcing parking meters ]]> Lead story image

As Chicago continues to clear remnants of Tuesday’s historic blizzard, officials on Friday morning say the city has no official stance on parking “dibs,” while it’s a freebie day for parking meters. The city says its top priority is clearing side streets, with 274 snow trucks and 200 pieces of heavy equipment being deployed in neighborhoods to clear heavy snow accumulations, a release from the Office of Emergency Management & Communications said. And due to heavy snow buildup on most streets, parking meters do not have to be paid on Friday, OEMC spokeswoman Therese Kordelewski said. The sky was sparkling, and the city’s busiest streets were mostly clear of snow Friday — three long, grueling days after Chicago’s historic blizzard. But things were still far from normal. Lots of side streets and most alleys remained snow-choked, drawing complaints from inner-city residents that their neighborhoods were being shortchanged for more affluent areas. And even though the 400,000-student Chicago Public Schools re-opened Friday, scores of kids remained home. The 24,000 students who normally ride yellow buses had to find their own way to school. As a result, attendance plummeted at some schools. The weather phenomenon La Nina is to blame for our recent storm-filled winters following a series of unusually mild winters, climate experts say. “Mother Nature has decided to show us what winter is like again,” said Mike Halpert, deputy director of the federal Climate Prediction Center. This week’s huge blizzard followed a classic La Nina pattern, says Louis Uccellini, a winter-storm expert who is director of the government’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction — from the Midwest to the Northeast and redeveloping off the coast. “We are linking the storm tracks to the La Nina pattern,” Uccellini said. Garbage collection has resumed in Chicago’s 50 wards, but it’s neither a pretty picture nor an easy job. In order to pick up the trash, refuse trucks have to first force their way through snow-covered alleys without getting stuck. Then, laborers have to dig out garbage carts buried in ice and snow without breaking their backs. Lou Phillips, business manager for Laborers Union Local 1001, said he heard of three trucks getting stuck in alleys on Thursday. Some alleys have been plowed. Others remain untouched. “They’re trying to go through some of these alleys with snow plows to try and … ]]> Sun, 06 Mar 2011 00:17:46 -0500 http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3660687-460/alleys-garbage-snow-trucks-carts.html http://www.suntimes.com/blizzard/3660687-460/alleys-garbage-snow-trucks-carts.html
