Lowney's brownies
Note: The Walter M. Lowney Co. was a Boston chocolate manufacturer. The 1912 recipe, as published below, did not specify cooking temperature, pan size or number of servings. For this story, McNamee baked the brownies in an 8-by-8-inch pan for 20 minutes at 350 degrees. He used 2 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate. Makes about 16 brownies.
½ cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 squares Lowneys premium chocolate
2 eggs
½ cup nutmeats
½ cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
Cream butter. Add the remaining ingredients, spread on a buttered sheet and bake for 10 to 15 minutes. Cut into squares as soon as taken from the oven.
