MAKES 16 SERVINGS

2/3 cup sifted flour

3/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup chopped walnuts

1 cup pitted dates, finely chopped

1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed

2 eggs, well-beaten

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Confectioners' sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan; set aside.

In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Add walnuts, dates and brown sugar. Add eggs and vanilla and blend well. Pour mixture into a greased 8-inch-square baking pan.

Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cut into squares while still hot. When cool, dust liberally with confectioners' sugar.
