October 17, 2007

MAKES 1 DRINK

SIMPLE SYRUP

(YIELDS ABOUT 2 CUPS)

1 cup water

1 cup sugar

COCKTAIL

2 ounces bourbon (Violet Hour uses Buffalo Trace bourbon)

1/3 ounce tawny port

1 ounce heavy cream, sweetened with a dash of bar sugar

1/3 ounce Licor 43, a Spanish liquer

1/4 ounce simple syrup

1 whole egg

GARNISH

Grated nutmeg

3 drops bitters (Violet Hour uses Fees Old-Fashioned bitters)

To make simple syrup, bring water and sugar to a boil. Simmer until sugar dissolves completely and mixture thickens slightly. Syrup can be stored, refrigerated in an airtight container, indefinitely.

To make cocktail, combine bourbon, tawny port, sweetened heavy cream, Licor 43, simple syrup and egg in a cocktail shaker. Shake to combine. Add ice. Shake long and hard. Strain into an empty glass.

Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and three drops bitters.
