MAKES 1 DRINK

Ginger syrup

½ cup water

½ cup sugar

2-inch chunk of peeled ginger

½ lime

½ ounce ginger syrup

½ ounce simple syrup*

½ ounce grenadine

5 raspberries

Make ginger syrup by combining water, sugar and ginger in a pan. Heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Allow to cool completely. Discard ginger and strain before using.

Muddle lime in a cocktail shaker. Add ginger syrup, simple syrup, grenadine and raspberries. Shake contents and empty shaker into a rocks glass filled with ice. Top with soda water.

*Simple syrup can be purchased in well-stocked liquor stores or made at home by combining one-half cup of water and one-half cup of sugar in a pan. Heat until sugar dissolves and allow to cool completely before using.
