The reward leading to the arrest of two men who killed an off duty Chicago police officer in the Austin neighborhood grew to $13,000 Saturday.
A group of West Side ministers added $2,000 out of their own pockets.
“We are hoping this is an incentive for people to speak up. We don’t want people walking around in fear as if they were in Afghanistan,” said Rev. Ira Acree.
Clifton Lewis was fatally shot as he tried to break up a robbery while working a second job as security guard at a convenience store Thursday night. Lewis got engaged to his girlfriend four days earlier — on Christmas.
Lewis, 41, had taken the security job at M&M Quick Foods at Austin and Division in part to help pay for the wedding, family said Friday.
Investigators said Lewis was hit by multiple shots in the 8:30 p.m. robbery.
The robbers, who were caught on surveillance video, apparently stole Lewis’ gun, sources said. The store had been robbed several weeks earlier, residents said.
Anyone with information is being asked to call (888) YPO-SHOT.
