As trick plays go, the Bears’ ‘fake’ punt return against the Packers would have been worthy of an ESPY—had it not been nullified by a penalty.
Even the Fox camera crew was fooled.
Let’s set the scene: With the Bears trailing by 10 midway through the fourth quarter, Devin Hester awaits a punt by the Packers’ Tim Masthay, who kicks away from the great returner. But Hester pretends to field the punt, and the Packers’ coverage team falls for it. Meanwhile, the punt is actually grabbed by the Bears’ Johnny Knox, who is 40 yards away from Hester on the other side of the field. Knox runs the ball up the sideline, having only Masthay to beat, and returns it for a TD.
But, one small problem: the ref called the Bears’ Corey Graham for a holding penalty.
Still, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers called it “the most incredible play I’ve ever seen.”
