Cubs pitcher Travis Wood had a two-hit shutout and two-run lead with two outs in the eighth inning Thursday at Wrigley Field.

And it all went downhill from there for the left-hander and the Cubs.

Pinch-hitter Yonder Alonso’s popup to shallow right glanced off right-fielder Julio Borbon’s glove after a long run, for a run-scoring single – opening a four-run rally for the San Diego Padres to beat the Cubs 4-2 in the finale of a four-game series.

Following Alonso’s walk, relievers Shawn Camp and James Russell combined to allow, in order, a run-scoring passed ball, walk, run-scoring single, stolen base, run-scoring single and hit batter before the 10th batter of the inning -- Jesus Guzman – struck out.

On a day he retired the first 14 batters he faced, Wood (2-2) wound up with the loss.

Scott Hairston’s two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh gave the Cubs the late lead before the ugly eighth.

The Cubs and Padres split the series.
