The Shamrock Shuffle was rerouted Sunday morning after a man threatening to jump into the Chicago River caused traffic to be closed on the State Street Bridge.
Police were first called to the bridge at 350 N. State St. for a well-being check about 6:50 a.m., police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.
They encountered a man threatening to jump off the bridge, Estrada said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and no charges will be filed, police said.
The man was safely removed from the bridge about 8:30 a.m., Estrada said.
Police closed northbound traffic on the State Street Bridge initially, but it has since reopened.
Meantime, the Shamrock Shuffle race was rerouted to avoid the bridge. The race route moved from Grand Avenue to Wabash Avenue, then on to Wacker Drive to State Street, Estrada said. The race then resumed its normal route, Estrada said.
