Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert announced on his blog Tuesday night that he has a recurrence of cancer and that he will be taking what he called “a leave of presence.”
In an essay marking his 46th anniversary of becoming the Sun-Times film critic, Ebert said that the hip fracture he suffered in December led to a diagnosis of cancer and is being treated with radiation. He gave no other details about this health development.
Ebert, 70, has had several bouts of thyroid and salivary gland cancer. He lost the ability to speak and eat because of the effects of tissue and bone reconstruction necessitated by cancer treatments.
In his essay, Ebert emphasizes that “I am not going away. My intent is to continue to write selected reviews but to leave the rest to a talented team of writers hand-picked and greatly admired by me.”
He’s calling this new arrangement “a leave of presence.”
He also announced that he is relaunching his site, rogerebert.com, and that he plans to launch a fund-raising campaign via Kickstarter to revive his “At the Movies” review series.
