A woman was killed in a fire Sunday morning at a home in the Oakland neighborhood on the South Side.
Vershonda Marshall, 41, was found unconscious on the second floor of a home on the 4100 block of South Berkeley. She was pronounced dead at 8:58 a.m. at University of Chicago Medical Center. Fire officials said Marshall, of the 8700 block of South Burley, suffered smoke inhalation.
The fire, which started about 8:15 a.m., apparently began on the first floor of the single-family home.
The fire quickly spread to the second floor and through the roof. It was extinguished at 8:39 a.m. The cause was under investigation.
Three other people were able to leave the house safely.
