Once again the Hawks came out firing from the opening faceoff Wednesday night, but this time it paid off. The Hawks found a way to finish their chances this time, and the result was a 4-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes -- the team's much-awaited first win of the season. They had two regulation losses and a shootout loss before breaking through, climaxed with the players saluting the crowd of 20,522 at the United Center with their sticks while leaving the ice.
Not only did Bernard Berrian bolt Halas Hall for richer pastures, but he left the Bears' unparalleled quarterback carousel behind. Berrian said Wednesday that the Bears' uncertainty at quarterback was part of the equation -- you know, along with the millions more the Minnesota Vikings offered -- in his departure via free agency.

Asian stocks early Thursday followed the Wall Street sharply down as despair over the economy propelled the Dow industrials down 733 points to their second-largest point loss ever. Stocks fell on a combination of disheartening economic data, including a big drop in retail sales and a Fed report that said tight credit conditions are hurting businesses across the country.
