NEWS ALERTS:

Ernest Nava Villa poses for a photograph with an Orozco Community Academy student during a visit to the school Thursday in Chicago. Nava Villa, 93, is the last-known living son of Pancho Villa, the Mexican Revolution war general. (John J Kim/Sun-Times)
Mexican legend Villa comes to life for schoolkids Some of the younger grade-schoolers yawned and fidgeted as the 93-year-old man with the thick white mustache and a cane walked stiffly toward the microphone inside the Orozco Community Academy gym Thursday afternoon. The children were perhaps a little too young to realize they were looking at a piece of living history -- the man believed to be the last surviving child of Mexican revolutionary leader and folk hero Pancho Villa.

Metro & Tri-state Cops trade gang-fighting tips
There are at least 80 gangs dealing drugs on the city's streets, protecting their business and territory with guns. On Saturday, Chicago Police gang and tactical officers from across the city will meet to learn about the best ways to anticipate what these criminal organizations -- with an estimated 75,000 members -- are doing and how to dismantle their operations.

Sports Bears waiting for Anderson to break out of slump Brad Biggs: With great pay come great expectations, so it's difficult to get as worked up about defensive end Mark Anderson's struggles this season as it is about some of the Bears who went through the Jerry Angelo cash-rewards program in the offseason.
Bulls' big men coming up small John Jackson: After the Bulls' embarrassing 116-74 loss Wednesday to the Portland Trail Blazers, I was curious to see how rookie coach Vinny Del Negro would react the next day.

So far, a nice road grip The Dallas Stars -- and their goaltender, Marty Turco, in particular -- had been brutal against the Blackhawks, especially at American Airlines Center. The Hawks were 1-8-2 with one tie on the Stars' home ice since 2001-02, and Turco owned a 14-2-1 career record against the Hawks going into the second game of the Hawks' six-game road trip Thursday night.

Don't be a turkey Our guide to Thanksgiving Chicago Sun-Times Sure, you can just show up at Mom's and stuff yourself silly. But there's more to this holiday than turkey (and more than one place to get it, should Mom's run a little dry). Not a cooker? Our restaurant alternatives Be a pro: Turkey cooking classes Where to lend a helping hand Bar specials on Thanksgiving Eve Slice and dice: City's best pumpkin pies

Lifestyles Lending a hand for holidays can be the best gift of all The holidays are always a time of surplus good cheer and great food, when we're reminded of our own good fortune and inspired to share it with those not so luck. In this period of economic strain, acts of generosity are increasingly welcome. The following organizations, committed to fighting hunger and homelessness, count on donations and the work of volunteers to keep needy Chicagoans fed and housed.

Entertainment Good tale wags animated dog in Disney's 'Bolt' Bill Zwecker: It's not among the most original Disney animated films, yet ''Bolt'' is one of those movies that in the end does what it's supposed to do. It's charming, nicely paced, often quite funny and features well-chosen voice talent. Most important, it provides a satisfying entertainment ''meal.'' It's not a ''gourmet'' banquet on the order of ''Ratatouille'' or the first ''Shrek,'' but this peppy picture is certainly more than a cinematic ''snack.'' 3 stars

Business Global economy too big to control Terry Savage: There was a time not so long ago when government officials debated which institutions were "too big to fail." Now they're learning the lesson that the global economy is "too big to control." It is the height of conceit for government and corporate officials to spend their time -- and our money -- debating priorities for rescuing constituencies. History says they'd be better off standing aside and not trying to turn back the tide.
