Metro & Tri-state CPS chief refuses anti-violence award
His voice quaking with emotion, Chicago Schools CEO Arne Duncan refused Tuesday to accept an anti-gun violence award, saying "I don't feel I've earned it'' with student deaths on track to double this school year. Duncan left the Abraham Lincoln Award from the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence on a sidetable, but walked away from the lecturn at the Ritz Carlton to a standing ovation from an obviously moved audience.

Campaign 2008

Sports Fukudome on a short leash In barely six months, he went from hero to goat -- from T-shirts, headbands, a Sports Illustrated cover and the All-Star Game to a .217 hitter in the second half, a bench player in September and the target of boos in October. But even as he prepared to head home to Japan, with his starting job in doubt and his major-league status being questioned, outfielder Kosuke Fukudome said Tuesday he has no regrets about signing with the Cubs last winter.

Williams not sitting still Someday Ken Williams will heed his owner's advice. Tuesday wasn't it. Today won't be, either. Or tomorrow. As a matter of fact, start crossing days off on the calendar, one after another, and it won't change. There will be Williams filling out his ''big board,'' either physically or in his head, obsessed with it like Will Hunting solving a math formula.

2006 Bears draftees impressive Mike Mulligan: If winning breeds confidence, it's no surprise the Bears are feeling pretty good about themselves after stacking a couple of victories together and finding themselves atop the NFC North. ''We're heading to the Super Bowl,'' defensive end Mark Anderson said. ''I really feel that way.''

Lifestyles Throw a feast despite famine The economic outlook may be as gloomy as the ever-earlier dusk and chilling weather forecast, but that's no excuse not to do a little autumn entertaining. Tailgates and sports-TV parties, pre-election coffee klatches, neighborhood leaf-raking events, PTA meetings and other such gatherings fill the fall calendar.

Jazz drummer Winard Harper christens the 299-seat performance space, followed by the Taj Mahal Trio on Friday and Saturday night. Business Stocks plunge deeper into abyss Sandra Guy: Wall Street heard no magic words from President Bush or Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Tuesday, so the gloom deepened. Leave it to a Chicago analyst to explain the consequences of the Street's denial that the subprime mortgage mess and housing bubble have become global issues.
