NEWS ALERTS:

A firm comprised of former MGM Grand president Alex Yemenidjian (inset) and three other companies made the highest initial bid -- $435 million -- to build a casino on this site in Rosemont. (AP file)
Rosemont has top bid for casino After years of delay, the race to land the state’s only available casino license is on. And Rosemont — where alleged mob ties helped sink a casino project earlier this decade — appears to have an early lead. Trilliant Gaming Illinois LLC this afternoon gave an opening bid of $435 million for the right to open a casino in the northwest suburb. That’s $210 million more than the next-highest bid.

Metro & Tri-state Daley budget includes 929 city layoffs
Acknowledging that nuts-and-bolts city services would suffer, Mayor Daley today proposed laying off 929 city employees, eliminating 1,346 vacancies and raising fees, parking and amusement taxes to solve Chicago’s worst budget crisis in a generation. “Believe me, I don’t want to lay off employees and cause pain and suffering in their families.

SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT Where Daley has gone wrong Comment from george: Time has come to end Daley's grip on the city. RMD has managed this great city into the ground, currently selling assets and resources to make ends meet. RMD is a clown and we are all fools for letting this go on for so long. The Duffs, Vanecko, Reyes, Dengan, Marchese, the list is endless. RMD gives away the city in return for political cash. No more RMD, but who can lead this city... I propose Ald. Brendan Reilly... at least he had the backbone to stand up to RMD over the Childrens Museum. Have something to say? Comment.

Campaign 2008

Sports Bulls start quickly, then fizzle in dropping to 0-3 After sluggish starts in each of the first two exhibition games, the Bulls looked like they were ready to work from the opening tip Tuesday night at the United Center. But the team's best first quarter -- in which they built a 19-point lead -- fizzled quickly, and the Bulls dropped to 0-3 in the preseason with a 96-86 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Hawks' Eager to add punch to lineup After watching the Blackhawks lose their first three games while he served a suspension for a preseason altercation, left winger Ben Eager can't wait to return tonight against the Phoenix Coyotes (2-0) at the United Center.

'Frustrated' Devin can't wait Mike Mulligan: Devin Hester hasn't changed. The problem is with us, the media and fans who await his every return as though it carries the fulfillment of a messianic prophecy. Hester is a flesh-and-blood return man, not a paranormal phenomenon.

Entertainment Madonna divorcing Guy Ritchie, but seeing A-Rod Bill Zwecker: “You could tell Madonna and Guy [Ritchie] were through — just by looking in his eyes,’’ a longtime member of the pop superstar’s team said Wednesday. “Ever since the end of last year, he’s had a hang-dog, sad look in his eyes. I just knew they were done.” And after months of strong denials, Madonna’s publicist Liz Rosenberg made it official Wednesday. In a statement, she said the couple agreed to divorce after 7½ years of marriage.
