One-Tank Getaways: Gas prices drive day trips Fewer people are traveling this holiday weekend than during last year's Fourth of July holiday, AAA spokeswoman Nicole Niemi said. Still, 40 million Americans are taking to the open road. The one-tank vacations are another way families are dealing with eye-popping fuel costs and sky-high airfare.

Metro & Tri-state Woman dies at hotel of stab wounds
Adalina Weber had just finished waiting tables at the Walker Bros. pancake house in Lincolnshire Saturday. But after apparently driving to a nearby hotel parking lot, she was stabbed multiple times, police said. She then managed to stumble into the SpringHill Suites Marriott hotel, where she collapsed -- and later died.

Campaign 2008

Sports White Sox buoyed by Floyd White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen likes to say he doesn't have to pay attention to the rest of the division as long as his team is in first place. The Sox are still alone in first place in the American League Central, thanks to a 6-1 victory Saturday over Oakland, fueled by pitcher Gavin Floyd (10-4) and home runs by Nick Swisher (12th), Brian Anderson (fifth) and Alexei Ramirez (seventh).

Cubs crash their party Jim Edmonds' party on his homecoming weekend to St. Louis was over before it started Saturday night. Cubs closer Kerry Wood's first blown save in a month and a half turned a two-run lead into a 5-4 whiplash loss to the Cardinals in this rollicking series at Busch Stadium.

'V' for 'Venus victory' Thrilled as she was to win her fifth Wimbledon singles championship, Venus Williams dialed down her celebration. No hopping in place and skipping to the net after match point, the way she has done so often on that Centre Court lawn. No giddy laughter and whoops of joy, as she has let out in the past.

Lifestyles Hard Rock Park: Feel the music in Myrtle Beach Dave Hoekstra: The world's first rock 'n' roll theme park could have been built in Los Angeles, whose musical legacy rides from Johnny Otis to the Doors. Or Memphis -- my choice for the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. (I'm sure we will see an Elvis World amusement park in our lifetime.) And London -- where the Hard Rock Cafe debuted in 1971 -- could have been considered.

Entertainment George Michael: Listen without prejudice I don't know about the whole show, ABC's new "Eli Stone" -- it looked a wee bit hokey, like "Touched by an Angel" for couples who conceived their kids after episodes of "Ally McBeal" -- but the George Michael clips make for great YouTube. Check out his debut in the series premiere. Eli's having sex and becomes ... distracted by ... music. He stops, investigates -- and finds George Michael in his living room singing "Faith."

Business It's a market fit for a monkey David Roeder: It's hard to figure. Wall Street is wailing. Oil is the new gold. You couldn't get a cheap airfare if you provided your own snacks and sickness bag. Hedge fund managers are on the lam or barring the gates against angry rich mobs wanting their money back. Yet the Chicago Sun-Times stock-picking monkey, Mr. Adam Monk, is one happy animal.

Billy Corgan has time to design a guitar for Fender...

But still can't be bothered to set a Chicago date for a reunited Pumpkins show. What's up with that? (Don't ask me; I haven't been able to get an answer out of anyone in the band's camp.) In any event, the release from Fender follows the jump.
