Disarming idea

If Ald. Ed Burke’s proposed ban on guns in Chicago restaurants is passed, will the bodyguards of Burke and former Mayor Richard M. Daley be permitted to have their guns on them in restaurants?

Give Bartman a break

Reading Toni Ginnetti’s story last week about the 10th anniversary of the Cubs’ collapse against the Marlins in the 2003 playoffs, I was struck again by the unfairness of blaming it on “The Bartman Ball.” In looking at the photo accompanying the piece, I noticed that there were other fans also reaching for the ball. To my mind, Moises Alou’s overreaction was the major factor in causing the pitcher to lose his focus and lose the game.

No to another war

The attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, were a crime, not an act of war. Yet, the attacks were used as the reason to invade and destroy two countries, Afghanistan and Iraq. Syria’s alleged use of chemical weapons also is a crime, not an act of war. Yet, it is being used as the reason the U.S. should invade and destroy that country.

I’m a Vietnam veteran and I’ve seen the results of U. S. invasions. If the political “leaders” of the U.S. were indeed leaders, they would use the in-place international legal system to resolve the issue. The U.S. cannot afford the human cost, the credibility cost and the financial cost of another war.
