Higgins cartoon unfair to Bridgeport

Iwill start by saying that I have always been a huge, huge fan of Sun-Times cartoonist Jack Higgins’ work. I still am. However, I must take exception to his Jan. 20 “Opinion” about Bridgeport.
I’m sure you figured by now that I reside in Bridgeport. In fact, I am a 60-year-old resident of Bridgeport. I was born and raised and still live on the same street I grew up on. My wife of 37 years and I have raised two children. Both are college graduates. My son is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. To say the least, our kids have never “lower yer IQ” nor “watch yer back” nor “dim yer lights” and they certainly did not grow up in the “5th century.”
Yet, they certainly did not get any mention in your “Opinion.” I know “Bridgeport” has a reputation. In some cases, it is totally justified. But to portray an entire community by the acts of these seven idiots, clowns and fools is disrespectful to me and my family and the majority of the people who live in Bridgeport.
I will always continue to “read” Higgins’ “Opinion” just as I have for many, many years. I have kept many of your pieces as I find them funny, informative, intellectual and inspiring. This last piece I found to be none of the above.

No endorsements? Thanks
What a unique, refreshing idea, a newspaper that tells you the news — and does not make endorsements. For many years, probably since the Clinton (“His sex life is more important than the economy, the USS Cole, etc.”) mess, I had lost faith in the news media to tell the truth. So today is a wonderful, refreshing change for me. I had been searching for a source of news, just plain honest, open, unslanted facts that I can base my opinions on. Now, thanks to you, I can rely on the Sun-Times for that source. Kudos to the Sun Times Editorial Board and congratulations to the people who work there. Thank you for making it easier for this man have a place where I can go to to find out what the facts are. Imagine that, a newspaper that tells the news, period.

Endorsements helped
I, as probably a majority of one, will miss your political endorsements. Though I did not always agree with your endorsements, I appreciated them as a final way for me to clarify my own voting decisions. The “snapshots” appearing just before an election always cut right to the chase. As the world moves forward, I guess I will have to rely solo on my own thoughts. Off with the old: On with the new!
