Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to use cameras to send tickets of up to $100 to anyone who drives over the speed limit within a quarter-mile of a school or park.

But as the chart at right shows, the so-called “safety zones” would include 66 percent of the city (including O’Hare). Pretty much any time you exceed the speed limit, you would be in an area where a camera could dock you $100.

No one has a problem with citations for dangerous driving at high speeds. But those cameras would be eyeing everybody, including lots of motorists going just slightly over the limit. Those $100 penalties could add up pretty fast.

Chicago “safety zone” legislation already introduced in Springfield should be rewritten to apply only to genuine speed demons.
