Editorial: Chico right man to head Illinois State Board of Education

Updated: August 3, 2011 4:39PM

Gov. Pat Quinn did the State of Illinois a favor on Tuesday, choosing the right man to head the Illinois State Board of Education.

In tapping Gery Chico as chairman, Quinn picked a man with the experience and temperament to shepherd the state board through difficult budget times, a major revamping of the state’s tenure and dismissal rules and the shift to a more rigorous common core curriculum.

Chico ran unsuccessfully for Chicago mayor but impressed us with his passion and his impressive background in education. He was president of the Chicago Board of Education and chairman of the City Colleges of Chicago board. Chico replaces Jesse Ruiz, who ably served as president for nearly seven years and now joins the Chicago school board.
